Shopping Chanel In The US

Chanel Price Increase In US – While Chanel was focused with their price increase plan in Europe and Asia, the retail prices in the United States remained unchanged for 4 years until November 2017. This is due to the fact that buying in the US has always been more expensive compared to most countries. And when the prices became more in line with Europe, it was time to slap the handbags with 5% to 8% increase. We have written an extensive report with comparison analysis. Is buying Chanel More Expensive In The US? – What we’ve discovered in the special US versus EU price report is that Classic Bags tend to be higher priced in the US compared to Europe. But surprisingly, if you decide to purchase a Seasonal Bag, the differences between those two countries are not that significant. In fact, we compared the Chevron Statement Bag in 2017 and the difference in price was only $40 USD. Would you fly to Europe to buy a handbag that’s only 40 bucks cheaper? I don’t think so. So if you’re living or travelling in the US:

  • Classic Bags buy in Europe
  • Seasonal Bags buy in US or Europe are both fine

Did we miss something? Yes we did. Can you claim tax-refund in the US? – The reason why tourists prefer to shop designer bags elsewhere is not only because of the prices, but also the sales tax. Sales tax is the same as VAT in Europe and every State has different sales tax. And here is the irony, you cannot claim ‘Sales Tax’ refund even if you’re just visiting. However, some States do want to attract shoppers like you and me, so they have created special rules. Some States do allow tax-refund and some don’t even impose sales tax. Everything has been written in the ‘guide to tax refund in the US’ article. If you’re interested of course.

Shopping Chanel In Europe

Europe is the bag paradise. A true fashion girl would love to shop Chanel in Paris, which is also the place where the legendary Coco Chanel started her journey. The Chanel Prices in Paris are almost the same as in other places in Europe. But I’m okay even if I have to pay a bit more, because no store can substitute the iconic boutique at the 31 Rue Cambon street. When you get a Bag there, they will seal it inside a white box. In other stores, you get a black box. Maybe it’s not something significant, but who doesn’t want to carry a Chanel Bag that’s made in Paris and sold at the mother of all flagships. 31 Rue Cambon was also the site of Coco Chanel’s apartment. Why is it so hot to buy Chanel in Europe? – That’s all because of the attractive prices. First of all, tourists get tax-refund. And even without the tax-refund, the retail prices are still cheaper than most countries. tax refund euro sample

More purchases equals to higher tax-refund

So how much tax-refund can you get buying a Chanel Bag? – It’s usually between 10% to 15% and it depends on the country that you’ve made the purchase. Our page Vat refund rate in Europe shows the exact amount of cash you can get back and from which country. But long story short, you can enjoy up to 15% tax-refund in Italy and 12% in France. Sometimes at the Chanel store in Galeries Lafayette in Paris, you can only get 11%, so do you research before shopping. Then there’s the cash transaction limitation rule that applies in the EU – If the price is €5000 euro for the Chanel Bag, you won’t be able to pay in cash in Italy. The maximum allowed in cash transfer is €3000 euro, so for the rest of the amount, you have to pay with credit card. Each EU country has their own law and rules. As a tourist in France, you can pay up to 10.000 euro in cash, but as a citizen, the maximum cash transfer is 1000 euro. Looking for more info? Check out the table that we’ve put together: Cash Transaction Limit Table. Another reason to shop Chanel in Paris is because of the number of boutiques available there – They have 13 stores that sell bags, SLG, shoes and jewelries. They load up stocks every single week, but there are competitions. Paris is full of tourists and sometimes it can be frustrating when you try to find a classic bag but it’s sold out or they don’t have the leather, size or color that you want. CDG airport chanel

Chanel At CDG Airport (Paris)

Another location that might interest you is the CDG airport (or Charles de Gaulle Airport) – If it happens that you fly in or out from that airport, feel free to visit the boutique in the tax-free area. The store is not big, the stock is limited, but you can find a lot of SLG and earrings there. It’s worth your time because the tax-free area will be slightly cheaper than shopping in the city. You can find the location of the stores via this page – Shopping at CDG Airport in Paris.

Shopping Chanel In The UK

London has 6 locations to shop Chanel – Two of our most favorite stores are Harrods and Selfridges. But do finish your journey at the boutique in the New Bond Street. They have some good stocks there too. Chanel heathrow airport t

Chanel Heathrow Airport

Chanel at Heathrow Airport is the cheapest place to buy in Europe – The little but famous store can be found at Terminal 3, in the tax-free area. They have decent stock including Wallet On Chain but also handbags. When making a purchase, the SA don’t add VAT, thus you don’t need to process tax-refund, which will make the ultimate price much lower. In our Chanel Guide To Heathrow Airport, I wrote a step-by-step instruction on how to shop at Heathrow. I also advice to hire a Personal Shopper, who will know the ins and outs, and short-cuts to get to T3 or T5 so that you can save time. They can also reserve a bag for you.

Shopping Chanel In Japan

Tokyo might not be the best place to find bargains, but tourists do get 7.41% tax-refund on all Chanel Bag purchases, which can be cheaper than other Asian countries. Besides, Tokyo is known for its exceptional taste of fashion and you might find some limited editions that are not available in other parts of the world. Another good news is that most stores do process your tax-refund.

Shopping Chanel In Canada

Our tax-refund guideline for Canada was very short, because since 2007, they have discontinued the tax-refund program for tourists. It’s as simple as that. But is it cheaper to buy Chanel in the US or Canada? – According to our price analysis, the differences in retail prices are not that significant. It might be slightly cheaper to buy in Canada, but it’s not worth travelling all the way there.

Shopping Chanel In Malaysia

Malaysia abolished their GST in 2018 – which means no product taxes anymore. Chanel quickly followed up with price decreases, which made us think: ‘is it cheaper to shop in Malaysia now?’. The price did go down, but the results of our research were disappointing. The new prices were still expensive compared to countries like Australia, but it was cheaper than Singapore and Japan. Europe was still our favorite destination though, because nothing can beat shopping in the EU.

Shopping Chanel In Korea

What I really like about shopping in Seoul and other places in Korea, is the speed of processing your tax-refund. Most popular malls do process the tax-refund for you, it can save you a lot of time and hassle. The airport is also very convenient to claim the tax-refund, actually the process is automated. You can read more via Guide to Tax-refund in Korea.

Chanel Purchase Limitations

Because of high demands and low stock, Chanel has to enforce purchase limitations in certain locations. In Australia, you can buy as much bags as you want, but in Europe it’s a different story. There is a lot of Chanel hunters and tourists in EU, especially in big cities like Paris, London and Rome. To avoid a few people buying up all the available stocks, Chanel has enforced strict purchase rules.

  • In the UK: Limit is 1 bag and 2 SLG per 60 days
  • In other EU countries like Paris: 1 bag per passport and 4 SLG per 90 days

The rules can change in different locations and sometimes with the store manager’s approval; they will allow you to buy 1 more bag.

The Reissue 2.55 Bag choice is aged calfskin.

Chanel Classic Boy Bag Basic Leathers

Calfskin, Caviar, Lambskin

The Classic Boy Bag usually comes with Calfskin leather. Lambskin and Caviar are priced the same and usually the aged calfskin. Patent Leather is a bit pricier. Chanel has recently banned exotic leathers like crocodile or lizard, as a replacement they introduces croc-embossed or lizard-embossed leathers. Both are made from calfskin. What’s Caviar? Why is this leather so stiff and hard? Everybody loves Caviar because it’s durable and easy-to-clean. Caviar is actually calfskin, but there is lot of types of Caviar’s. Everything is explained inside our Caviar Leather Reference Guide page. Read it.

    Hi Alex,
Thanks for replying back! I purchased my Gucci bag in Rome at their store near the steps. I feel like the sales people can be misleading – one SA at Bulgari advised me that I would get the full VAT refund but then started back tracking once I asked more questions. I never got to shop at the airport and didn’t know if the airport would offer more savings. Seems like I would save a bit more and wouldn’t have to bother with paperwork!
I would like to share that I’m in Paris and purchased the Goyard St. Louis GM (smaller one) and the price was 810 euros. Since we were using our credit card the SA offerd to ring us up in our own currency and said the US conversion would be better. We were charged $960 USD. We did the paperwork at Printemps and per the tax free form we are supposed to get 87.48 euros. Hope that helps any future shoppers!

Hi Rose, thanks for sharing this. What you did was correct, you should ask the SA about the details of the VAT-refund because they should know the process. And different store might have different process. The airport have a little bit more saving, but only in tax-free areas. Whenever you purchase a good, make sure always ask the SA and get all the paperwork before leaving the store.

Actually, the prices of Europe and UK are now in line after the price increase in Europe. I did some calculation, the prices do not differ much, check here:

The price of the Chanel Classic Quilted WOC is right now:
At retail store: £1630 GBP (retail price) minus £213 GBP (tax-refund) = £1417 GBP (converted to USD: $1844 USD)

      At France:
At retail store: €1865 euro (retail price) minus €223 euro (tax-refund) = €1642 euro (converted to USD: $1876 USD)

The only place that’s cheaper is heathrow airport:
At Heathrow airport: £1369 GBP (converted to USD: $1781 USD)

But heathrow do not stock iconic handbags like the Boy Bag and has limited stock.

I think the only place that is 2% cheaper is in Italy because their tax-refund is the highest, about 14%. 2% on a 4000 euro bag is around 80 euro more tax-refund.

Please shed some light on duty free shopping at the airport vs. getting a VAT refund. I was in Paris last year and didn’t have time to look at any of the boutiques at the airport – I was stuck in a long line for the VAT refund.

Which is better? Are the prices at the airport Gucci inflated since it’s tax free? I’ll be traveling to Paris and Spain this year and want to be smart about my purchases. I purchased Gucci handbags in Rome and was told that they are cheaper by 30% – well after I purchased and got the VAT back, I saved about 17%. Confused as to what happened because I didn’t quite feel like I got a steal lol.
It occurred to me that I will be leaving Paris to go to Istanbul and I believe my airport is on the European side…

Thank you in advance for your insight & shopping tips!

Hi Rose, let’s check it out oke?

Let’s take the Gucci GG Garmont Matelassé Bag, the price is now 980 euro at the retail stores.

France: 980 euro (retail price) minus 117 euro (tax-refund) = 862.4 euro (Retail store after tax-refund)

France Airport: 980 euro (retail price) minus 156 (tax-free estimate) = 823 euro (airport price tax-free)

17% is quite a lot, did you buy the bag at the airport?

I think the 30% off is because the person who told you bought it at an outlet in Italy. There are lots outlet there and they sell Gucci bags for much cheaper prices but they are not from the latest trend. The general rule of thumb of tax-refund throughout Europe is around 11 – 14% at retail store and with Italy the highest at 14%.

    Hi!

I’ve been wanting to buy classic chanel m/l in ghw for the longest time and while i was in Dubai last weekend, i was ready to take the plunge (I live in pakistan and theres no chanel store here). However when I saw the bag upclose and felt it and touched it, I was SO SO disappointed. It was nothing like I’ve seen in videos and on other people a hundred times over!

The caviar leather was so lacklustre(i know its supposed to be grainy and not shiny but even then it had a lustre to it), it was so lifeless! So much so the ghw against that parched black/grey looked odd. I was close to tears and just couldn’t make myself shell out dhs 18000 for that bag!

My question is, has chanel actually lost its quality? Could it be Dubai only thing? Should i still look elsewhere?

    Thanks alot.

Hi Laura, if you can’t decide, follow your instinct and if you still can’t decide, I can tell you now that the Classic Flap Bag is more popular than the Reissue 2.55 Bag. The single flaps have been discontinued for a while now.

All the information has already been provided above.

      Chanel Medium/Large Classic Flap Bag
      Style code: A01112
      Price in euro: €4260 euro

Chanel Reissue 2.55 size 225 Bag (also the medium size)
      Style code: A37586
      Price in euro: €4260 euro

It doesn’t matter whether you choose caviar or lambskin, or gold or silver hardware, the prices are the same.

Tax-refund depend on which country you buy the bag, it ranges from 11 – 14%. In Paris its around 12 – 13%, in Italy you get 14%.

Hope this helps and keep us updated

If you tell the SA A01112 in silver hardware and caviar, she will know exactly what you want. You might also asked which options (color and leather) of the A01112 are available, there might be another leather you like.
