Chanel Price Increase In US – While Chanel was focused with their price increase plan in Europe and Asia, the retail prices in the United States remained unchanged for 4 years until November 2017. This is due to the fact that buying in the US has always been more expensive compared to most countries. And when the prices became more in line with Europe, it was time to slap the handbags with 5% to 8% increase. We have written an extensive report with comparison analysis.
Is buying Chanel More Expensive In The US? – What we’ve discovered in the special US versus EU price report is that Classic Bags tend to be higher priced in the US compared to Europe. But surprisingly, if you decide to purchase a Seasonal Bag, the differences between those two countries are not that significant. In fact, we compared the Chevron Statement Bag in 2017 and the difference in price was only $40 USD. Would you fly to Europe to buy a handbag that’s only 40 bucks cheaper? I don’t think so.

Can you claim tax-refund in the US? – The reason why tourists prefer to shop designer bags elsewhere is not only because of the prices, but also the sales tax. Sales tax is the same as VAT in Europe and every State has different sales tax. And here is the irony, you cannot claim ‘Sales Tax’ refund even if you’re just visiting. However, some States do want to attract shoppers like you and me, so they have created special rules. Some States do allow tax-refund and some don’t even impose sales tax. But I’m okay even if I have to pay a bit more, because no store can substitute the iconic boutique at the 31 Rue Cambon street. When you get a Bag there, they will seal it inside a white box. In other stores, you get a black box. Maybe it’s not something significant, but who doesn’t want to carry a Chanel Bag that’s made in Paris and sold at the mother of all flagships.

Why is it so hot to buy Chanel in Europe? – That’s all because of the attractive prices. First of all, tourists get tax-refund. And even without the tax-refund, the retail prices are still cheaper than most countries.
So how much tax-refund can you get buying a Chanel Bag? – It’s usually between 10% to 15% and it depends on the country that you’ve made the purchase. Our page Vat refund rate in Europe shows the exact amount of cash you can get back and from which country. But long story short, you can enjoy up to 15% tax-refund in Italy and 12% in France. Sometimes at the Chanel store in Galeries Lafayette in Paris, you can only get 11%, so do you research before shopping.
Then there’s the cash transaction limitation rule that applies in the EU – If the price is €5000 euro for the Chanel Bag, you won’t be able to pay in cash in Italy. The maximum allowed in cash transfer is €3000 euro, so for the rest of the amount, you have to pay with credit card. Each EU country has their own law and rules. As a tourist in France, you can pay up to 10.000 euro in cash, but as a citizen, the maximum cash transfer is 1000 euro. Looking for more info? Another reason to shop Chanel in Paris is because of the number of boutiques available there – They have 13 stores that sell bags, SLG, shoes and jewelries. They load up stocks every single week, but there are competitions. Paris is full of tourists and sometimes it can be frustrating when you try to find a classic bag but it’s sold out or they don’t have the leather, size or color that you want.
Another location that might interest you is the CDG airport (or Charles de Gaulle Airport) – If it happens that you fly in or out from that airport, feel free to visit the boutique in the tax-free area. The store is not big, the stock is limited, but you can find a lot of SLG and earrings there. It’s worth your time because the tax-free area will be slightly cheaper than shopping in the city. The price did go down, but the results of our research were disappointing. The new prices were still expensive compared to countries like Australia, but it was cheaper than Singapore and Japan. Europe was still our favorite destination though, because nothing can beat shopping in the EU.

There is a lot of Chanel hunters and tourists in EU, especially in big cities like Paris, London and Rome. To avoid a few people buying up all the available stocks, Chanel has enforced strict purchase rules.
- In the UK: Limit is 1 bag and 2 SLG per 60 days
- In other EU countries like Paris: 1 bag per passport and 4 SLG per 90 days
The rules can change in different locations and sometimes with the store manager’s approval; they will allow you to buy 1 more bag.

Hi Sally, your friend shouldn’t have trouble buying two wallets. The buying restriction is only for bags =). As for the wallet, I don’t have the exact price, it’s usually somewhere between 400 – 600 EUR. But Europe is definitely cheaper than Singapore.

My problem is: I have been lucky to take a look at it in two different stores in Florida (West Palm Beach) and in Las Vegas lately. Unfortunately, I am confused because in both stores the handbag was “Made in Italy”.
I asked the saleswoman why the handbag was not “Made in France” and the answer was the following: It depends on where the company buys the leather.
I want it to be a perfect original Chanel handbag so I would like to know if there is a difference about the production of the bag. If I want to buy this specific bag that was “Made in France” then is my only option to get it in Paris, France? Also, does the size of the bag matter in terms of where it was made? Meaning: Do you produce certain bag sizes in certain countries?

I had discussed this issue before with a girl who visited our site. There are Chanel bags made in three countries, including one in Italy. I would say this: the quality of France and Italy are good, but the dream bag ‘of course’ has the ‘made in France’ print in the interior. I mean Chanel, Paris, France right? You will have another reason to brag.
Well, as far as we know, all Chanel bags in France has the ‘made in France’ tag. But in some European countries, they also sell Chanel bags made in Italy. The stock varies, meaning they could have a mix of Chanel bags made in Italy and France. The girl who I talked to, requested for a Chanel bag made in France, she finally got what she wanted. You should discussed this with your SA.

I purchased a medium black caviar with silver hardware from the Collins street store in Melbourne. Nathan was my SA and was so lovely. Price was $5030AUD and I got the tax back of over 500AUD through the visitor tax back scheme.

I sure do love my bag – I called 2 weeks beforehand and had to special order it in. They were happy to hold it for me until I arrived. My SA, Nathan, said that they haven’t had a silver hardware medium flap in the store for a very long time (they sell a lot of GHW), so all the SA’s were oggling it.
Getting the tax back made was awesome and made it ~$4500AUD, so technically “less expensive” than buying in NYC 😉
Also, when I originally contacted Chanel both in NYC and Australia and asked about price increases, the SA’s I spoke with hadn’t heard about any increase for the remainder of 2013…. but who knows 🙂

Hi Grace, Please not that Asia is more expensive than US. Some states don’t have sales tax, that’s how you can avoid it. But I am not sure about Chanel + Shipment in the US.
About the availability, the jumbo caviar (I assume in black) is quite popular, you should call Chanel in CA first to check the stock and if possible make a reservation.

How far in advance? It depends on the boutique, in Europe it was like 24 hours, but I heard in Australia the SA kept the bag reserved for 1 week for a customer. If you can, I would make a reservation, just in case.

Please do not consider to buy luxury handbags in Asia. I’m from Singapore and I made my purchases in Europe and once in a while in US. A maxi handbag in Singapore cost about S$7800 and I paid S$5000 in Europe after tax rebate. It will cost about S$6000 in US. (Price quoted in Singapore currency). So you can see how much difference in price. Asians go to Europe and US to shop.

Hi MROULI. PETITE TIMELESS TOTE (with zipper) has been discontinued. Whereas the PETITE SHOPPING TOTE has been removed from the classic series. It does not fall into the seasonal bags either. But Chanel will bring in the bag from time to time upon request from customers. The PST was on sale again from May this year and stock has been low and sold out at most stores. They are unlikely to restock till further notice. I was in Munich yesterday and PST has been out of stock since July. These reliable information I received from the Sales Director of Chanel in Europe, for your info.

I love the PTT too. You can easily get a GST. I bought a beige one 2 months back in Vienna for €1790. Was in Munich last weak to get a PST but all sold out. The price is the same in Europe. I strongly suggest that you visit the store between Tuesday to Thursday. If you come on the weekends, you will be disappointed. They replenish their stocks on Mondays or Tuesday mornings. I would check the bag for quality, pay and have it delivered to the hotel. But note that even in your hotel, you should keep the bag in your luggage ‘locked’. One girl shared a horrible story, her aunt went to France, bought a bunch of luxury bags, left it in her hotel room and when she came up, stolen!

They only accept credit cards. What you could do is to request your bank to increase the credit limits of your card, or simply pay the items separately using different credit cards. I was in Italy couple of months ago and I am certain they do not accept cash for above €1000. In fact how lower priced items they still prefer credit card payments. Please note that you will not be expecting the best treatment in Chanel stores even if your are purchasing over €20K worth of handbags 🙂

Hi Jessica, this is the general price for the Chanel medium boy bags, it ranges from: Price EUR: €2,650 – €3,000. You get 12 – 14% tax-refund and I would still recommend Paris and London. It’s crowded, but they have plenty of boutiques and thus more stock. Monday is the best day to shop actually, because of re-stock, less crowded.
