Is it cheaper to buy in the US or in Europe?
There are two conclusions: 1). Buying Europe is cheaper regardless with tax-refund or not. 2). As a tourist, shopping in Europe is a must, because the tax-refund will make it even more cheaper.
Louis Vuitton was established in Paris, which is known as the city of high fashion. But I don’t mind going to other places in Europe to search and hunt for my favorite bag. Places like Milan, Florence, Amsterdam, London are packed with endless shopping streets and beautiful boutiques. Just remind yourself that the bag you decide to take home, must be made in France.
How about the tax-refund scheme? – The main reason why most fashionista’s are in Europe. Thanks to the tax-refund program, we can get designer bags must cheaper than other countries. The prices are already relatively lower, so the tax-refund is another extra discount. In the

*** When Buying LV in Europe*** (current as of March / April 2015)
*THE POSITIVES: I just recently returned from a European trip during which I made several LV purchases in Palermo, Rome, Marseilles, and Monte Carlo. Many of the European boutiques stock items not sold, or no longer available in the US. You may be delightfully surprised to find items and patterns you thought were unattainable! Every item I purchased (including SLG’s which are now typically made in Spain), was marked MADE IN FRANCE — for many American LV-Lovers this is a high point. Yes, the prices are lower in Europe. How much lower depends upon the strength of the US $ vs. the €uro. Right now is an excellent time to buy!
*TAX REFUND: In Italy you’ll pay 22% tax on your purchase, and receive a 12-13% VAT tax refund (subject to conversion rate AND a service fee) at the airport when exiting the country — but only if all your tax refund documents are properly prepared by the LV associate when your purchase is made. FOR THIS YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR US PASSPORT WITH YOU AT THE POINT-OF-PURCHASE — Don’t go shopping in Italy without it! *Note: To qualify for this refund there is a minimum purchase amount (approx €100.) however this should not be an issue with lux brands such as LV, Hermes, Burberry, Longchamps as you will surely exceed this minimum.
*THE NEGATIVES: Be forewarned, if you change your mind about an LV purchase made abroad, the usual US refund /exchange /return policy WILL NOT APPLY when you return to the US. No refunds of any kind. No “even exchange.” That’s correct, if you want to swap the item for color, or if you’d like the identical model in a different print (like swapping Monogram for Damier, or perhaps a silk scarf for a different pattern) — it will not be done. Instead, you will receive a store credit for the US value of the item (meaning what it sells for domestically, so be sure it’s an item sold in the US or it may not be accepted for return) and you will not be refunded for any taxes you paid. You then apply this store credit to the re-purchase of the identical item in your choice of color (or perhaps a different item altogether). The US tax will be calculated based on the FULL price of the purchase. Yes that’s correct: you lose the tax you paid abroad, and then you are charged full US tax on the new purchase. Double whammy! Any savings you may have enjoyed by purchasing abroad will be quickly consumed in this process. The sales associate in Europe will cheerfully assure you that LV policies are “global” and that you can easily exchange in the US if you change your mind later — but as you can see, this is a very misleading sales pitch. Surprise!
*MY ADVICE: #1) KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. If you’re indecisive you will encounter assorted issues attempting to refund, return, or exchange once you’re back in the US. #2) USE THE INTERNET. Check both the US and European official LV websites before going abroad. No, you cannot purchase from the European website and have it shipped to the US (the site will redirect you at checkout)… but you can price-compare, so do that! I also recommend utilizing the internet while in Europe, to determine current pricing, currency conversions, and other pertinent info to make well-informed purchasing decisions. #3) CONSIDER PAYING IN CASH. If using a credit card, know this: Most US credit cards impose a foreign-transaction fee, some don’t. You’ll want to check yours in advance and select accordingly. Your US bank will make the conversion to US dollars on your billing statement, but ultimately it costs less to simply pay in cash, using EUROS. You will not have credit card protection features such as lost/stolen item replacement, extended warranty, etc. but that’s the trade-off for saving more $. Consider this carefully! #4) GIFT RECEIPTS. Be sure to obtain an individual gift receipt for each item purchased. You’ll need this as proof-of-purchase for any type of return or future repairs. US boutiques cannot access a foreign database to check your purchase history. #5) XEROX COPIES. Ask the LV associate to provide you with a xerox copy of your register receipt or credit card receipt AND the LV final bill of sale showing the individual prices + tax paid. Why? Because your original receipts must be relinquished at the tax refund desk in the airport.
I’m VERY pleased with my shopping experience, and I saved tons of money by doing my due diligence. Hopefully the information I’ve provided here will be helpful to others as well.

Hi Maura, its cheaper to buy in Europe as a tourist because of the tax-refund and so on. The prices in europe are all the same, but its true that the stock in Paris is better. The current price for the Neverfull GM Monogram is 945 euro, The Zippy Wallet is around 615 euro if I am correct.

I saved tons of money shopping LV in Europe! (See my detailed post above)
Hot stamping is included with your purchase but if waiting time is an issue, you can have this done when you return to California. Be sure to obtain gift receipts, as I mention in my post above. The flagship store at 100, Champs Élysées in Paris is a surely a sight to see. It’s often crowded with tourists, so get there in the morning if you’d like to receive unhurried, personalized attention. Be sure to allow some extra time to view the antique steamer trunks and various vintage displays throughout the store. You didn’t mention which cities you will be visiting in Italy, but I thoroughly enjoyed shopping at LV in Palermo, Sicily. The experience was very pleasant. In Rome there are 2 locations. At the base of the Spanish Steps you will find a sea of couture shops. Here at the Via Condotti location, when my preferred item was out of stock, we were served champagne and truffles while waiting for the 2nd LV location to hand-deliver my silk scarf in the pattern of my choice. Nice service.
As of 4/01/15, the Monogram Neverfull GM is €945. and the zippy wallets are €545 (in typical accordion style, or in the European vertical style) and €515 for the zippy compact (open-book style). So that’s around US $1600-1650 for both the bag AND the wallet. WooHoo!
