Controversial: Has The Hermes Birkin Bag Lost Its Appeal?

During my hunt for inspiration, I came across an interesting article. The writer made me stop and think. Of course as a Hermes fan, I am totally against it. But who knows what you might think. His article started with the headline: ‘’Has Hermes Birkin Bag lost its appeal?’’ and on the top of that, he supported his opinion with a few strong convincing points. Well, is he right?

A few bullets:

• If Birkin was so expensive and hard to get, why do so many woman – and men carry them?
• Too many people who are not fashionable have it. And they carry it everywhere.
• A Birkin cost thousands of dollars. It represent success, achievement and status.

In some way, I do agree with the writer. Why do so many actually carry Birkin and why are they available in all kinds of colors, shapes and materials. From what I heard, Celine has a serious buyer restrictions. Some people are saying that you can only buy one Celine bag in x amount of time, and they track you! But why? Because Celine doesn’t want their bags to end up on Ebay or in a luxury bag store selling for a premium price. Isn’t it time for Birkin to limit their supply, so that the proud owner can say: ‘I have a Birkin, and it’s hard-to-get’’.

  1. Yes. The Birkin bag has lost its appeal. I purchased my first Hermes Kelly in the early 80s at the Rue Faubourg flagship in Paris. I walked in, chose the bag, paid and walked out. Same with the Birkin I purchased a number of years later. There was no drama, no wait (unless you wanted a custom bag), and the general public had no idea what they were. Fast forward almost 20 years. Hermès has become like DeBeers, trying to control the market hold on to brand status. Sadly, every D list pseudo celebrity and “influencer” manages to snag a Birkin. Fakes abound. Ridiculous Instagram Birkinmania has ensued. The Kardashians and the ex-strippers alone have ruined its appeal for me. It is an elegant bag now seen on the arms of many inelegant women. I still carry mine, but not as often. I’ve switched to other, under the radar Hermès models.

  2. Has the Birkin Bag Lost it’s appeal; Absolutely! I have been trying to building and collect a serious Designer closet collection for the past 10 years and a Birkin has always been at the top of the list. At $8K to wait for one, I have always hesitated to put my name on the wait list and now, more than ever, I am so glad I didn’t waste my money. What’s changed my mind is it’s not how many you see, IT’S LOOK AT WHO’S CARRYING THEM. Regarding Celine. It’s not possible to track the sale of 1 person buying Celine bags because you can buy them at, of course their boutiques, but also at Barney’s, Neiman’s, Bergdorf’s and a lot of other great privately healed boutiques across the county. I actually bought 4 different Celine bags in 1 year and nobody has said a word to me about it or denied me the purchase.

    • Hi Mellisa, you shared some high-value information that needs to be featured in our next newsletter. You are absolutely right, Birkin has been a headache for a lot people in our community, hard-to-get, even when the SA has the bag in store, they do not always show, thanks for your input.
