Attended at the exhibition in New York on the 57th Chanel Jewelry St, the Chanel 2.55 has a quite interesting story. Seats at the exhibition were limited and it was held between the 8th and 16th of May. The common question on everyone’s lips was: “What are the secrets of the Chanel 2.55 handbag?”.

The exhibition featured basically everything about the bag. From modern day production and design, to the bag’s background story. The exhibition featured a 70 inch flat screen television that was put on top to display how exactly the Chanel 2.55 was made. The steps are as follows:

Step One: Cutting
Step Two: Quilting
Step Three: Assembly
Step Four: Shaping
Step Five: Turning Out
Step Six: Chain
Step Seven: Packing

After viewing the birth process of the Chanel 2.55, it makes you anxious to purchase it. The exhibition centered a lot of hype and inspiration on the bag (and for good reason, too).

First, the cutting is carried out by special machines that were personally designed just for Chanel. This is just a piece of the pie, as to why the Chanel 2.55 is an awesome bag to have. More than 80% of the bag’s production time is composed of prep function. Prepping the bag actually involves around 180 stages.

Then a master craftsman puts all the components of the bag together. This can take up to ten hours, only on one bag. The bag is then sewn together inside out. Then it takes another craftsman to turn the bag back out. This takes a lot of skill, and is the main secret behind the Chanel 2.55.

The bag is then screwed together, with the hardware and grommets. Right before the finished product is being polished and prepping for tissue paper wrap, the handbag is finished off with the chain. With all these specifications, imagine how Coco Chanel herself must’ve designed and assembled the original Chanel 2.55 handbag.
The name 2.55 refers to the date that Coco Chanel had released the bag, February 1955. As the years comes by, the popularity of the Chanel 2.55 was vague and was re-introduced by Karl Lagerfeld on February 2005. That’s it got the name: Chanel 2.55 reissued.
