I was headed to PC Hoofdstraat—the most expensive street in Amsterdam—to the Chanel shop to look at some bags. When I got there I couldn’t take my eyes off the Medium and Jumbo bags. I was shocked at the fact that I could not find the difference between them at first. They actually share a lot of similarities; however, when I put them together I seen that the Jumbo size is quite larger than the Medium.
With that being said, I have a dilemma…
First, I tried on the medium bag and I loved it. I liked the way it looked in the mirror on my shoulder. Then I tried on the jumbo bag. I also loved the way it looked on me. They are both beautiful bags that I adore. I think the saleswoman was a bit aggravated with my indecisiveness. I just could not decide which bag to pick. I was literally driving myself mad because both bags were just perfect. The saleslady also agreed with both bags being beautiful, but she eventually ended up saying the medium size bag was better. I think she just wanted me to hurry and make decision already.
I, then, asked for the difference between the prices. The medium bag was just a few hundred euro’s cheaper than the jumbo bag. Since both bags are priced in the thousands range, a few hundred euro’s doesn’t really make much of a difference to me.
Therefore, the price difference couldn’t really help me choose between jumbo or medium. I started to think about which bag would be more suitable for my every day style and personal style. Whichever bag I chose, I didn’t plan to wear every day because I want it to last long.
I know I will use it for important events such as my nephew’s upcoming wedding, or when I am out on a date, or when I want to celebrate something and go to the club with my girls. However, this type of thinking did not help me come to a conclusion.
One factor that I took in mind was the fact that the jumbo size bag is a bit larger than the medium size bag. I don’t plan on carrying around all of my cosmetics, or much of anything for that matter of fact. I don’t carry much, so only a few key essential things are fine with me.
So after about an hour and a half passed while I was in the Chanel boutique. And, after all that time I walked out of the shop with nothing. I still couldn’t make a decision after all of that time. I know, I’m so bad when it comes to simple decisions. But, I’m glad I didn’t force myself to make a decision because Chanel bags are so expensive. I have to be really sure before I purchase one.
I think the saleswoman was a bit more aggravated that I didn’t make a purchase at all. She probably thought that I didn’t have the money because I look very young. I am quite young; I recently turned 20 years old.
So have you ladies ever been in the same predicament of indecisiveness? It can be so frustrating, right? Maybe you all can help me choose. What type of things do you consider when choosing between the sizes of a bag? With the Chanel Classic Flap in mind, would you choose the medium or jumbo? Why? Which one do you think would fit me perfectly? I would really love your opinion. I obviously can’t make this decision alone.
I can only choose one bag in the end, so I want to choose the right one; the perfect one for me. Please tell me what you think. Thanks…

I want to buy my first channel bag, but I get the same dilema! I also dont know which hardware, silver or gold… could someone help me and tell me which one is better and why? Oh, and to find one (either is jumbo or medium) in calfskin, is it seasonal? Or if I go to the store I may find it easily?
Hi Susan, check whether you usually wear gold or silver. If you never wear gold then pick silver hardware.
As for the jumbo or medium, when you carry an everyday bag, do you carry much? You see, the medium is very small, its more like an evening bag. You won’t be able to store much in there. If you need a bigger bag, then pick jumbo.
The Chanel classic flap bag in jumbo and medium are crafted in either lambskin or caviar. I think Caviar is the best option, because its more durable.
These bags are always available, but gets sold out most of the times because they are classic bags. It depends which city you go, because for example in Paris, there are a lot of tourist buying luxury goods, so the stock is lower.
This brings back so many memories for me, in 2008 I bought my first chanel at PC hoofdstraat, it was the medium classic flap caviar SHW. I simply bought it because it was cheaper than the jumbo, back then it was 1,600 euro, definitely much cheaper than now, nonetheless still a hefty investment for me, who was then a graduate student from a SE Asian country. I’m 5 feet and slim so i think the medium worked out well for me, even till now I still use it because i’m a light packer. To be honest now I also really want the jumbo because with 3 children sometimes you just need a bigger bag. But knowing the price back then I don’t know whether I would ever shell out 4000 something euro for the jumbo.
I need to agree with you on that one. The medium is easy to carry but small, the jumbo is only good when you need a lot of things to carry.
